When dating an instrument by the ‘pot code,’ keep two things in mind: The potentiometers must be original to the piece (new solder, or a date code that is off by ten or more years is a good giveaway to spot replacement pots); and the pot code only indicates when the potentiometer was manufactured!
Jun 19, This is a brief outline of the various pots and caps and wiring used by Gibson. This is not a complete summary but is a good start for the beginner. IRC used code to begin the sequence of numbers on the pot case. Central Lab used and CTS used codes. The way to ready a pot code is as follows. There are several scenarios. IRC always began with xxxxx CTS always started with xxx or xxxx.
Here is an example 8 represents the year and week 28th week. Central Lab always begins with xxx or xxxx. Remember this that pots can pre-date a instrument year but never post date it. It was common to have pots 6 month earlier than an instrument but an exact cut off time is impossible to nail down. Usually the earlier the instrument the closer the pot dates are to the instrument manufacturing date.
As the companies grew they bought more inventory and pots sometimes were mixed or lying around for a period of time before they were used.

With all the fat, sweet, snarling Les Paul tone that purists love, the Gibson Les Paul Traditional Pro IV sports a mahogany body with a thick maple cap for the perfect blend of warmth and clarity. The top is finished in high-gloss lacquer, while the back, sides and neck have a smooth satin finish that feels great and lets the wood resonate fully. Period-Correct Pickguard The cream-colored pickguard has been a Les Paul staple dating back to the models of the late s and the early s.
Many players, however, removed the pickguard from their Les Pauls to show off the beauty of the flame maple tops, prompting Gibson to stop installing the pickguard altogether. During the s and s, Gibson began reinstalling the pickguard in the factory, and the Les Pauls from this era once again arrived in stores bearing the classic, cream-colored pickguard.
These new pickups feature nickel-plated pole pieces, nickel slugs, maple spacers and 4-conductor braided wiring.

Return to the Main Index. Sometimes there just isn’t enough information on electric instruments and amps to allow them to be properely dated. And many people ask me to try and determine the year of their old amplifier, or to help them with the year of their older off-brand electric guitar. Since I primarily collect amps by Fender, and guitars by Gibson, Fender, Martin, National, Epiphone, Gretsch and Rickenbacker, I really can’t help them with these other less popular brands.
As you have probably noticed, there is plenty of information here to help date the brands that I am interested in.
We’re not talking about dinner and a movie, of course For my first blog post on dating instruments, I’d thought I’d talk about potentiometer or, “Pot” codes which can be used to help date almost all electric instruments, amplifiers, and effects pedals made in the U.S, as well as many in Europe, etc.
Note the major changes to neck construction and neck joint. Note the minor change in maple top construction and body tenon route. Note that is a name change from “Standard” to “Deluxe” in this time period. The change is typically associated with the addition of mini-humbuckers, the 3pc neck, trans tenon, and a “Deluxe” engraved truss rod cover. So, let’s say that a 3pc neck always equals a ‘Deluxe’.
Left handed instruments become available for order around Sept ‘ Ship towards end of with “Later Series” features. All exhibit xxx or xxx serial. No additional charge, special order only. The defining features of this era are the transitional neck tenon, the addition of mini-humbuckers, the early body, and the 3-pc neck. There were a few guitars made during the transition from 5xxxxx to 8xxxxx with a 60xxxx serial number. The earliest I have now seen is a X guitar.
