Replica made from the alleged Caprotti sketch. There are several early, but unverified claims for the invention of the bicycle. The earliest claim is that the bicycle was first made by the hand of Chinese inventor Lu Ban [1]. Another later report, in the form of a sketch, comes from and attributed to Gian Giacomo Caprotti , a pupil of Leonardo da Vinci. In Hans-Erhard Lessing described this as a purposeful fraud. While Schwinn often had a reputation for building heavy bikes for kids, the Paramount line had a reputation for finely crafted, relatively light road bikes. That is obviously a great price. The very nice woman selling it was good natured about the low price. The bike had belonged to her uncle who no longer used it.

From wandering through the streets packed with vibrantly colored buildings to walking the walls of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, there is no shortage of cultural offerings.

Handpainted Guitars When I started doodling with art, I decided to paint a few Jem bodies and the colorful guitar I used in the “Dark Mater” video was one of them.

The bike was a disaster–a real rust bucket–but as I tore it down, I was astounded to see that it was largely unused and almost completely original. None of the bearings had any visible wear, and even the brake pads, gears, chain, and cable sheaths were ones that came new with the bike. The only nonoriginal part was the saddle; I assume that the original leather one died a moldy death as the bike sat decaying in a series of garages. My philosophy of old bikes probably won’t be approved by most purists.

I am not interested in creating museum pieces; I have no interest in a bike I can’t ride. I don’t have the time, inclination, or energy to research any bike in detail and to determine its original configuration, down to the last lockwasher. I’ll probably never own a bike that has any real historical or artistic significance. It’s just a bike, for chrissake, not an Amati violin. Still, I love the elegance of older bikes, and I’m fascinated by the combination of practical functionality and artistic design that they embody.

That’s what should be preserved.

WELCOME TO THE BICYCLE MUSEUM. Bicycles are wonderfully simple, eloquent and efficient machines. A few of the bikes were purchased by me, or for me, new, including the brown Schwinn SuperSport, the Trek , the Univega FS, and the Trek (for one of my sons).

Canada’s capital thumbs its nose at winter. By Paula Szuchman Winter is high, high season here: Miami nights start late—dinner doesn’t get going until well past nine—so leave time for a catnap before hitting the streets. Daylight hours are typically reserved for sleeping off the night before—preferably on the beach. I looked at a lot of custom builders, but kept coming back to the Pelican because of its traditional style, features, cost, availability, and colour amongst other pluses. The seat and head tube angles are both 73 degrees respectively, making for great ride characteristics. I decided on mm wheels rather than B for convenience.

None of the bike shops around me carry B tires or tubes, so I would either have to order them online, or go down to Victoria to buy them. The bigger tire width absorbs a lot of road shock, making a very comfortable ride.

In contrast to the workaday grind to which so many lives are devoted in most big cities, New Orleans is a place where priorities incline toward enjoying life and relishing the moment at hand.

In these cases examination of the frame number — where it is, what it is, and how it is, may be of some assistance at least in allowing other specialists to hazard a guess at the true origin of the frame or machine. These publications have been invaluable in adding accuracy to the information — but even including their data there are still well over makes of possible lightweights to be confused over! The author would be grateful to know of any inaccuracies and to receive further information to make the tables more comprehensive.

For example, some BSA frames have BSA and a 3 or 4 figure number cast into the base of the BB, this is just the casting number or perhaps a model number — it is not the frame number. Nervex, the lug maker, also had their name on their BB lugs with a long design serial number. Make a note of where on the BB the number is and its orientation — for example, is it upright or inverted for reading when lifting the front wheel up with the rear wheel still on the ground? Is it central or on the left or right flange of the BB as seen from this upright view?

Some builders stamped the numbers parallel to the edge of the BB, yet others are random when compared over the years. Most builders also stamped the frame number on the steerer tube of the front forks — but you may not wish to strip the machine down for this and in any case the forks may have been changed over the years.

It can be worthy of note however that as sometimes very thick layers of paint can make the main frame number difficult to read —the steerer tube number is the only reliable evidence!
